Remington Model 870 12-Gauge Shotgun
Purchased @ gun show.
Wingmaster; 3-inch chamber, removable choke tubes. Came with improved cylinder. I added a full choke and a modified choke so as to learn how to shoot trap. It is a beautiful shotgun in very good shape and a lot of fun to shoot. Every woman should have one.
This is an exploded diagram of the gun in case, God forbid, I ever have to make an adjustment or repair.
See Footnote B for a good Wikipedia history of this model of shotgun.
ReplyDeleteBreak down and reassembly instructions for a good cleaning. Footnote F.
ReplyDeleteShot a lot of trap over the winter of 2013 in Florida...Footnote L is a composite of scores with different chokes used with this gun.
ReplyDeleteFootnote M is a list of trap shooting tips that I am going to try and follow my first 10 or 20 rounds in Wisconsin.
ReplyDeleteShot a box of reloads that I was worried about. They extracted OK; also a box of factory AA loads.
ReplyDeleteMay 23, 2013--Shot an 18, tying my best in the first round, followed by a 12 at 18-yds. Then I went to bank a round for next week because I'm traveling to South Carolina. Got in with two other guys which made the pace kind of fast, plus I shot some 3/4-oz loads and hit only 8. I at least followed it up with 16 at the 16-yd line, so next week, the team will not have a big handicap but will at least get 16 from me on the second round. The 870 ejects my crappy reloads, but unless I slam them home in the breech, once in a while one won't go all the way in and the firing pin won't set. Then I have an embarrassing time trying to get the shell rejected. I've got to remember that. All in all, it went OK. I got rid of a lot of my cruddy batch, particularly 4 that were waxed shut.
ReplyDeleteJun 6, 2013--I shot very poorly with my reloads, primarily because I had seating problems. I shot an 11 from 16-yds and only a 6 from 20-yds. In discussing with my teammates, though, I realized that I am not resizing. When I got to the farm, I knocked some primers out of my next intended batch and realized that you have to push down farther and the tool resizes the brass or aluminum! I have not been aware of this! Unfortunately I have a lot of shells to shoot up, but many of them are AA's and they work better anyhow. Live and learn!
ReplyDeleteShot the first round with factory shells, and had good focus. I broke the first ten. On the third station, "click" no go. Then again and again, even with a different shell. Dejectedly, I turned to walk back to the sidelines. Lo and behond I had two offers of substitute guns there, one an 870, which I took. I ended with my lifetime high by two birds, a 20! That moved us to the 20-yard line and I actually hit 16 from there, another all time best! I am suspicious that wax and crud have built up on my breech and that something packed up against it and won't let the pin set. I'll have to break it down and clean it and inspect it real good.
ReplyDeleteBroke it down and the barrel did not look bad. I put foaming bore cleaner in it. The action was gritty, and I sprayed Rem oil in it and blew it out best I could...it started working, so I cleaned it out well and oiled it well, put everything back together and I think all is well. We'll see. I'll have my back-up gun right handy.
ReplyDeleteGun operated perfectly for one box of factory loads and another of my shabby reloads. No fouling. Broke my personal best at 16-yds with an unbelieveable 23 after missing first shot in first two stations (5 and 1) and then hitting everything, like 19 in a row!
ReplyDeleteOperated just fine for a factory box, which I broke 18 with, and a reload box of crappies which were going just fine (AA's) until I slipped in a candle waxer to get rid of it. It misfired, shooting out only the wad, like it had no powder. Broke 20 at 18-yards even with that misfire, though. Trigger malfunctioned again after that, so I'll have to clean it all out again. Gonna throw away the last handful of those waxers.
ReplyDeletemore trouble! Went to Portage to shoot w/a friend and after 10-factory loads it bound up again. A fellow took down the trigger mechanism on a picnic table and it started firing again, but I only got through two stations of the second round before it bound again. Our feeling is that there is a worn part on the hammer which does not keep the firing pin poised, or some obstruction which is causing it. The gun thinks it has already fired. A friend at my club knows a member who is a good gunsmith and who will take down your gun and clean/repair it. Will check that out ASAP!
ReplyDeleteTook it to the club member who is a gunsmith and had a great experience! He took off the barrel, clamped the receiver in a vise and tapped out the retaining pins to remove the trigger and hammer mechanisms, instantly reporting that the problem was minor. There was a lot of gunk in there, which he oiled up and blew out with an air compressor. I asked if it would be worthwhile to use spray brake rotor cleaner, and he said "no", that it would dry everything out completely. Just to oil it and wipe it off again occasionally. Put it together again and said it was as good as new. I can't wait to shoot it again. He also said he would look over my Mauser Chileno and determine whether it was 7-mm X something or had been rebored to .308 like some have been.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say he was right! The gun functioned perfectly and I equalled my all-time best of 23 at 18-yd and set an all-time best of 14 at 21-yds. The first box was factory loads and the second a reasonable box of my poor reloads, about half with little play-doh chunks. All fed and fired well! I am a happy camper.
ReplyDeleteShot a 20 after having a little more trouble, which surprised and exacerbated me. I had a "dud" for the first time ever! The firing pin dented the primer deeply and the shell didn't fire! I also had a couple of hang-ups on shells which I didn't think fit into the chamber deeply enough. One fired on the second try. I'll be glad when I get all those reloads shot up and move on to the good ones where I resized the shells. I had another really good round going, but the problems got into my head a little. Still tied my 3rd best ever score, though!
ReplyDeleteshot 17 and 19 at Portage and shot up two boxes of my mediocre reloads, all fifty shells fired with no hang-ups. I think I'm down to seven boxes of that batch now and they're mostly AA's.
ReplyDeleteshot 17 in the trap league with factory (Gun Club) loads, and 14 at 21-yds with my AA reloads, no problems with either.
ReplyDeleteShot an 18, which is good for my all-time 9th place at Stoughton CC.
ReplyDeleteBrought it to FL with me and went to the range today with my neighbor across the street who purchased a new 870 Express today and shot it for the first time. I shot 20 and 19, far better than that club was used to seeing me shoot. Good for my 5th and 9th best rounds.
ReplyDeleteNot so fortunate on Tuesday, shot a 13 and a 16, didn't seem to have my focus. It was in the 90's and humid; maybe that had something to do with it. Anyhow, good for 33rd and 25th places all time.
ReplyDeletetook a close family member to the range and gave her an initial lesson. She enjoyed it. Shot two rounds myself and was quite "on" today...a 22 and a 19, good for 3rd and 10th in my all-time list.
